The use of surface electromyography (sEMG) as a biofeedback tool in the treatment of dysphagia has shown promising results, particularly in post-stroke patients.1 Research demonstrates activation levels significantly increase with biofeedback for effortful swallowing in patients with dysphagia compared to no biofeedback.2
The addition of mTrigger biofeedback allows patients to see information on the screen representing their movements (in this case swallowing). This allows patients to determine the difference between what was actually performed and the desired outcome.2 Furthermore, mTrigger biofeedback helps add motivation and improve motor learning.3
Dysphagia can result in a significant loss of function and quality of life. However, mTrigger biofeedback can be an effective adjunctive technique for enhancing the outcomes of swallowing rehabilitation.
Using biofeedback for dysphagia rehabilitation speeds up recovery time by improving the efficacy of every muscle contraction. Through visual feedback, each rep is maximized and optimized, teaching accurate movement early on. mTrigger biofeedback should be in the arsenal of every expert looking to provide high quality care for their patients.
